Mount Rainier experienced the largest earthquake swarm ever recorded beneath the volcano in 2025.
Yet the alert level never changed.
That apparent contradiction reveals why Rainier is considered one of America’s most dangerous volcanoes — because the deadliest threat may not require an eruption at all.
Beneath its glaciers, thousands of years of hot acidic water have weakened parts of the mountain’s rock. If enough of that material collapses, it can generate a lahar: a fast-moving mixture of mud, rock, ice and debris capable of racing down populated river valleys.
