CALIFORNIA 1978 Cold Case Solved After 47 Years — The Knife Was Marked “Teacher Dear”
For 47 years, the murder of California high school teacher Diane Peterson remained unsolved. On June 16, 1978, Peterson was found fatally stabbed near her classroom at Branham High School in San Jose, just one day after school had ended for the summer.
Investigators eventually focused on Harry “Nicky” Nickerson, who was just 16 years old at the time. His name had surfaced early in the investigation, and witnesses had described a suspect who resembled Nickerson. One witness also told police that Nickerson had confessed and had been seen carrying a knife marked with the chilling words “Teacher Dear.” At the time, however, investigators could not corroborate the claims.
Over the following decades, other witnesses came forward with allegations that Nickerson had admitted involvement in Peterson’s killing. Yet the evidence was never strong enough to bring the case to a conclusion. Even extensive DNA work conducted in 2023 and 2024 failed to identify the killer.
Then, in 2025, investigators finally uncovered the breakthrough that had eluded them for nearly five decades. A family member told police that Nickerson had arrived at their home just minutes after the murder and confessed to stabbing Peterson. That disclosure allowed authorities to officially identify Nickerson as Peterson’s killer.
There was one major complication: Nickerson had died by suicide in 1993, meaning he would never face a trial for the crime. Before his death, he had also accumulated convictions for other violent offenses, including armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping.
