Germany's far-right AfD poised for major gains in eastern state votes

Three eastern German states go to the polls on Sunday, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) predicted to make major gains, leading in two of them. On average the party is twice as popular in the former East Germany as in the west, and could win enough votes to govern in Saxony-Anhalt.

Many of those expected to back the party are East Germans who feel disaffected with mainstream society more than three decades after reunification in 1990.

Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane reports from Magdeburg.
