Global National: Sept. 4, 2026 | Canadian job market declines, hot streak ends in August

Despite most economists expecting a small gain, Canada’s job market broke its recent hot streak with a loss of 42,000 jobs in August. By contrast, the U.S. saw a surprising jump in jobs, following a string of losses. The White House was quick to credit tariffs as a reason why. Those strong U.S. job numbers – along with persistent inflation – could be reasons for the U.S. Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. That would be the classic economic response, but U.S. President Donald Trump has been pushing for rates to ''fall.” On Friday, he went so far as to threaten to cut off all trade with countries posting a trade surplus with the U.S., including Canada, unless he gets what he wants. One of the factors driving inflation, which remains higher in the U.S. than in Canada, is the cost of diesel. It has reached an all-time high in America as its war on Iran drags on. As Candice Cole reports, the cost to fill all of those transport trucks, and farm tractors, is being passed along to consumers.

Drama ensued in a Massachusetts courthouse Friday as a judge declared the high-profile murder trial of Lindsay Clancy a mistrial. Clancy admitted to killing her three young children before trying to kill herself in 2023. Her defence team argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder – and that she should not be held criminally responsible. But as Heidi Petracek reports, after days of deliberation, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in a case that has opinions divided well beyond the courtroom.
