US-Canada trade tensions are escalating as US President Donald Trump warns that Canada could be in “serious trouble” if Washington stopped trading with its northern neighbour. Trump claimed Canada conducts around 95% of its business with the United States, while recent Canadian trade data shows the share of exports going to the US has been declining.
In July, the United States accounted for just over 66% of Canada’s total exports, down from nearly 69% in June and more than 72% a year earlier. Canada’s trade surplus also narrowed sharply to C$769 million in July from C$4.2 billion in June, according to Statistics Canada.
The latest developments come ahead of Washington’s new 50% tariffs, which could put further pressure on Canadian exporters and intensify the ongoing US-Canada trade dispute.
Meanwhile, tensions have also spilled into legal cooperation. A Wall Street Journal report claimed the US Justice Department’s antitrust division instructed officials to pause cooperation with Canadian authorities. However, the US Justice Department strongly denied the report, saying no such directive was issued and that officials had only postponed a scheduled meeting related to a specific investigation.
The developments highlight the increasingly complicated relationship between Washington and Ottawa under President Donald Trump, with trade disputes, tariffs and political tensions continuing to strain ties between the two long-standing allies.
