The sailor is accused of malingering and absence without leave, potentially putting half his pay at risk. His wife has condemned the move, arguing that someone experiencing a mental health crisis needs help rather than punishment. The controversy comes after the Lincoln’s deployment was repeatedly extended during the Iran war, increasing concerns over crew fatigue, prolonged time at sea and deteriorating conditions. The USS George Washington has since arrived to relieve the Lincoln.
