In this episode, Janice Lee and Bruce Dodson find love later in life, marrying in a western-themed ceremony in Cedaredge, Colorado, after both had experienced painful past relationships. Just three months into their marriage, the couple heads out on Bruce's first hunting trip to celebrate their anniversary, a getaway that quickly turns into every family's worst nightmare when a nearby hunter hears gunfire and later discovers Bruce fatally wounded in a remote area of the Uncompahgre National Forest.
Initial reports suggest a tragic hunting accident, but as investigators examine the scene, small inconsistencies begin to raise questions. Detectives soon turn their attention to Janice's ex-husband, whose nearby campsite becomes a focal point of the case, though a lack of solid evidence stalls any arrest for years. It's not until investigators revisit the crime scene with new expertise that a piece of physical evidence, tied to a distinctive type of clay near the ex-husband's camp, offers the breakthrough they've been searching for.
The resulting investigation uncovers a calculated plan involving stolen weapons, recently taken-out life insurance policies, and financial motives that had been set in motion even before the wedding took place. The case culminates in a lengthy trial that reveals just how far greed and premeditation can go, resulting in a first-degree murder conviction and a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
