The trial of Mario Fernandez Saldana is beginning in the murder of Jared Bridegan, more than four years after the Microsoft executive and father of four was shot and killed in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
Fernandez Saldana, 38, is charged with first-degree murder and solicitation to commit a capital felony in connection with what prosecutors allege was a carefully planned murder-for-hire plot.
On February 16, 2022, Bridegan, 33, was driving home with his young daughter after leaving from a date night with his twin children from a previous marriage, when he encountered a tire blocking the roadway. After getting out of his vehicle to move it, he was ambushed and shot to death. His daughter remained in the vehicle just feet away.
Prosecutors allege Fernandez Saldana conspired in the plot to kill Bridegan while married to Bridegan’s ex-wife, Shanna Gardner, 39, amid a long-running and contentious custody dispute between Gardner and Bridegan.
Henry Tenon, 65, the man accused of carrying out the shooting, was also charged in the case. His alleged role, statements to investigators, and connection to Fernandez Saldana have become significant pieces of the State’s case. Initially pleaded guilty, Tenon has since withdrawn his plea to not guilty.
Fernandez Saldana and Gardner have both pleaded not guilty and are being tried separately. Now, with a jury selected, prosecutors will begin laying out their case against Mario Fernandez as his defense team fights the allegations against him.
Fernandez Saldana faces Life Without Parole, if convicted, while he remains in jail since being arrested March 16, 2023, in Orlando, Florida.
