The USS Benfold spent four days unable to manoeuvre in the South China Sea after an engineering failure disabled its generators, propulsion, toilets, galley services, air conditioning and potable-water systems. Other US vessels supplied meals before the destroyer was towed to Subic Bay for repairs. The Navy says no sailors were injured and the ship has returned to duty. There is no evidence of enemy action, but the failure raises fresh concerns about maintenance and readiness across an increasingly stretched American fleet. Watch.
