19 Elephants Die Mysteriously in Kenya's Amboseli | Paralysis, Cyanide Tests Spark Wildlife Crisis

A mysterious and potentially deadly illness has claimed the lives of at least 19 elephants in southern Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem, raising alarm among wildlife officials, conservationists and local communities.

The affected elephants reportedly develop severe paralysis, lose their ability to stand and eventually collapse. In advanced cases, the condition can affect their ability to breathe.

The cause remains unclear. Initial toxicology tests reportedly detected high concentrations of cyanide in some carcasses, prompting concerns over possible pesticide poisoning. However, local experts and Maasai farmers have questioned that explanation, pointing to the fact that scavengers and livestock consuming the same sources have reportedly remained unharmed.

The deaths are particularly concerning because many of the affected animals are females and young males. Amboseli is also a major tourism destination, meaning continued elephant deaths could have wider economic consequences.
