Russia-Japan Ties Hit new Low Following Putin's Island Visit | WION News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Iturup, one of the disputed Kuril Islands claimed by both Russia and Japan, triggering a strong reaction from Tokyo. It was Putin’s first visit to the Kuril island chain, which Russia controls but Japan refers to as the Northern Territories.

Japan’s government strongly protested the visit, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi calling it unacceptable. Tokyo also summoned Russia’s ambassador over the move. Moscow, meanwhile, reaffirmed its claim of sovereignty over the islands.

The territorial dispute dates back to the end of World War II and has remained a major obstacle to a formal peace treaty between Russia and Japan. Putin’s latest visit comes amid already strained relations between Moscow and Tokyo.
