Ukraine’s farmers are facing a growing crisis as Russia’s blockade of Black Sea ports disrupts grain exports and leaves storage facilities close to capacity.
In the central Zhytomyr region, farmer Serhiy Rybalko says the lack of buyers and falling grain prices are making it difficult for farmers to generate the income needed to sustain their businesses and prepare for the next planting season.
Rybalko, who lost much of his land in Kherson after Russia’s 2022 invasion, warns that if Ukrainian farmers cannot sow winter crops and prepare their fields, the consequences could extend beyond Ukraine and contribute to a wider food crisis.
