The Final 10 Months That Killed Half of Germany's War Dead | Full Documentary
As the Third Reich collapsed, Adolf Hitler searched for salvation in fantasy, propaganda and technology. This documentary explores how the Nazi regime tried to turn military failure into false hope, from the feared Tiger tank and the propaganda legend of Michael Wittmann to the V1 and V2 rockets developed at Peenemunde. These so-called wonder weapons promised revenge and victory, but their real impact was limited. The Tiger was powerful but slow, costly and unreliable, while the V2 was technologically revolutionary yet inaccurate, expensive and built with slave labor.
The episode follows Nazi Germany’s retreat from reality during the final phase of World War II. It examines Wochenschau newsreels, Goebbels’s film Kolberg, Hitler’s fantasies of rebuilding Berlin as Germania and the regime’s desperate use of terror to keep soldiers and civilians fighting. As Allied armies closed in, the Nazis created the Volkssturm, sent boys as young as 12 into battle and threatened deserters and civilians with execution. From the failed wonder weapons to the Nero Decree and Hitler’s final days in the bunker, this is the story of a regime that chose destruction over surrender.
