A deadly 6.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto region, leaving at least 13 people dead and triggering a desperate rescue operation. A section of the Aeon Mall collapsed after a reported explosion, trapping people inside as emergency teams race against time to find survivors.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that “every second counts” as thousands of military personnel, firefighters, and rescue workers continue operations. The disaster has damaged infrastructure, disrupted services, and brought back painful memories of the region’s devastating 2016 earthquakes.
