A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake has struck Japan's Kyushu island, with the epicentre off Kumamoto Prefecture, triggering a tsunami warning and reports of building collapses and multiple injuries.

Authorities have urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate immediately as waves of up to one metre are expected.
