The procession then returned to Iran, where massive crowds packed the courtyard of the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, waving Iranian flags, religious banners, and photographs of both the late Supreme Leader and his son Mojtaba — who succeeded his father but remains hidden from public view after being disfigured in the February 28th U.S. airstrike that killed Khamenei. Three of Khamenei's sons — Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud — led the funeral prayer behind the coffin, while Mojtaba's continued absence drew significant attention as a sign of the unease still gripping Iran's leadership. Khamenei was killed in a U.S. airstrike on the first day of the war, and his burial comes as hostilities with the United States have resumed despite a brief truce, with Iran still controlling the Strait of Hormuz and proclaiming its survival as a victory against the world's most powerful military.
