Mike Turpin was quiet, devoted, and had spent most of his life waiting for someone who truly needed him. Beth Zehnder was electric, outgoing, and impossible to ignore. From the moment they met at the University of Kentucky, they were inseparable. On August 24, 1985, they married in horse country under a perfect summer sky.
Five months later, Beth came home from a girls' night out to find a disturbing scene in the foyer of their apartment. No Mike. No explanation. Just a footprint at the scene and it didn't belong to her husband.
When Mike's body was discovered in a golf course pond across town, Beth had a story ready for police. Mike wasn't who everyone thought he was, she said. He had a secret past. A shadowy drug organization called "The Family." Debts. Enemies. Police couldn't find a single piece of evidence to support any of it.
