President leads tributes to man killed in Dublin city centre bus tragedy
President Catherine Connolly has led condolences to the family of a man in his 80s who died after being struck by a bus in Dublin.The man passed away following the incident on North Earl Street yesterday afternoon. Three other people, including the driver of the bus, are being treated in hospital.The President also thanked emergency services for their swift response to the incident. An Garda Síochána responded with Dublin Fire Brigade and ambulances.“May I further thank the emergency services for their swift attendance on the scene and send my best wishes to those injured and wish them a speedy recovery, as well as to all those impacted by today’s event," said the president.Tánaiste Simon Harris said he was “deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic bus crash in Dublin city centre this afternoon”.“My thoughts are with the family of the person killed and with those injured. I am very grateful to our emergency services for their response.”“I want to reassure Dubliners that the situation is being actively managed, and I would ask the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to carry out their work."Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald said, “I am devastated to learn of this terrible incident in the heart of our city. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and all of the people who were struck or caught up in this collision, with their families, friends, and loved ones, and with everyone affected by what must be a very frightening experience.”“We thank Gardaí, Dublin Fire Brigade, ambulance crews and all first responders for their professionalism and courage,” she added.“At this stage, our priority must be the well-being and recovery of those hurt, and the full support of their families.” She urged anyone who witnessed the incident to follow An Garda Síochána’s guidance and to assist with their inquiries.Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien said: “I am truly shocked and saddened to learn of today’s tragic incident in Dublin City Centre."I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the person who has lost their life and to those injured in this horrific incident. They are in my thoughts at this difficult time."I am being kept informed on the latest developments. Emergency services and Bus Éireann personnel attended the scene. Bus Éireann is offering its full support to the relevant authorities and will provide any additional assistance required.I would also like to pay tribute to the men and women in the emergency services who have responded to this incident in the most professional manner.”Bus Éireann confirmed there were no passengers on board the bus at the time as it was out of service.Chief Executive of Bus Éireann Jean O'Sullivan said: "We are profoundly saddened by this tragic incident."On behalf of everyone at Bus Éireann, I extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, and our thoughts are with all those affected at this very difficult time."A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident involving a bus on North Earl Street, Dublin 1, on Thursday 5th February 2026 shortly after 12:35pm. A male pedestrian, aged in his 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Coroner has been notified."A second male pedestrian (20s) is being treated in hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
