Flooding expected to continue into the weekend with further rain expected

Flooding and disruption to roads and travel may extend until next week, as the "full impacts" of the recent heavy rain may not be known for days.Keith Leonard told RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland that despite overnight rainfall not being "quite as heavy" as they previously expected, the chairman of the National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) said that 'we won’t really know the impacts until later today or early tomorrow."This is due to rainfall over the Wicklow Mountains flowing into south Dublin, Kildare and Wexford over the next 24 or 48 hours. The NECG is due to meet at noon today.“We’re hopeful that we might get away today without too much damage to property, but I think you’ll see roads flooded and, particularly along those coastal areas, I think you’re going to see more coastal overtopping throughout today and tomorrow,”he said.“Unfortunately, we have the coincidence of very high tides, surface flooding and very high river levels.”“We’re on full alert right throughout the weekend. Rainfall will be much lower throughout the weekend, thankfully, but that lag will continue to have an effect across the weekend,” he said.Further rainfall is expected on Monday and Tuesday. Roads are still impacted by rainfall from the past 24 hours. He asked that those commuting today “slow down" and never drive through flood water. "Every day this week, we’ve had to rescue people from trapped cars” he said. “They’re dangerous and it causes a lot of stress for people when that happens.”Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said: "A damp to wet Friday morning but rainfall totals overnight little lower than forecast for many areas. However 53.8mm of rain last has fallen in last 24 hours at a private station near Roundwood in Wicklow and the River Slaney in Tullow is rising fast.More rain to come today with highest totals in East and Northeast."Rain is predicted every day between now and Tuesday in Met Eireann's latest forecast update. This ranges from showers on Saturday to heavy spells returning by Tuesday.Today's weather warning has been reduced from a status orange to yellow for rainfall in Dublin, according to the latest update from Met Éireann. The yellow warning is in place until noon.Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content. We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
