Heartbroken family of murdered gangster David Byrne 'can't believe' killers are 'still free'
The heartbroken family of murdered gangster David Byrne has said they "can't believe" his killers are "still free" and he's not here anymore on the 10th anniversary of the hotel hit.Multiple floral tributes were left outside the Bonnington Hotel, which was once called the Regency, in honour of Kinahan gangster David Byrne. The 33-year-old was assassinated in the lobby of the hotel during a boxing weigh-in that was taking place on February 5, 2016.Both Patrick Hutch and Gerry "The Monk" Hutch were charged with murder and faced trial - but to date nobody has been convicted for pulling the trigger. The charges against Patrick were dropped by the State in 2019 after the death of lead investigating officer Det Supt Colm Fox.Meanwhile, the Monk was acquitted of murder by the Special Criminal Court in April 2023 after a lengthy trial. Paying tribute, David's sister Maria wrote: "To my beautiful baby brother David, love and miss you so so much."Still can't believe it your not here no more with us and the murderers are still walking around free allowed to what they like it makes you laugh (sic). Where's the law when they know who it is to (sic)".Meanwhile, a tribute from his brother Liam, who is currently on house arrest in the UK, was also left. It read: "David, my bro, I love and miss you until we meet again". The note was signed off with your "big bro Liam xxx".David's other sister Joanne, wrote: "My beautiful baby brother, can't believe it's 10 years. 10 years since I told you I love you. 10 years since I got to hug you. 10 years since I saw your beautiful face."10 years since you were brutally murdered. You have our beautiful dad up there with now looking after you. Keep looking after all of us David especially my mam."Many of the tributes also make reference to their dad, James "Jaws" Byrne, who died in 2024. Joanne wrote: "Give my dad a huge kiss and hug from me and tell him I love and miss so much."We think and talk about you every day. Love and miss you so much David" His brother James also said: "Life hasn't been the same since you were brutally taking from us" (sic). While his mum, Sadie, said: "David, our beautiful son, we all miss you so much, my heart is broken until we meet again. I love you so much"In addition to floral tributes, the family also left blue balloons with David's face on them.Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
