Gardaí issue public safety weather advisory and say 'expect disruption' when commuting
Gardaí have issued a public weather advisory ahead of possible further flooding and disruption due to rainfall.A Status Yellow rain warning is in place from noon today until midnight for Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford. Met Eireann said further heavy rain and showers falling on saturated ground, combined with high river levels, may lead to localised flooding, river flooding and difficult travelling conditions.Gardaí said that due to the forecast unsettled weather conditions, they remind the public to "take extra care and to stay informed over the coming days," reads a post from An Garda Síochána Wicklow. They advised the public to stay informed of forecasts from Met Éireann as conditions may change quickly.They added that drivers should expect disruption when commuting. People should travel with caution over the coming days."Check local authority websites and social media for road closures, flooding updates and community alerts," they said.• Plan extra travel time and reduce speed.• Be alert for surface water, debris and poor visibility.• Do not drive through flood water – turn back and use another route.• Never bypass “Road Closed” signs as they are in place to reduce potential risks to life.• Check with transport operators before travelling.When it comes to spending time near open water, rivers and coastlines, people should be wary. Stay back from riverbanks, streams and canals – water levels can rise rapidly.Keep children and pets away from flooded areas. Avoid coastal edges, harbours, piers and low-lying promenades, especially at high tideThey echo the advice of The Irish Coast Guard: “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry.”Look out for others too. Gardaí ask that the public be good neighbours, and check in with any vulnerable neighbours or older people in the community who may need assistance if conditions worsen.Gardaí also shared a warning from ESB Networks, who warn of the danger from fallen live wires.
