Government warning for scam text messages about reduced electricity bills and grants
The Department of Social Protection is warning people of scam text messages about energy grants and upgrades.They said that they are aware of an increase in scam phone calls, text messages and emails circulating claiming to be about energy grants or schemes. They want to remind the public that the government departments and agencies or your bank will never phone, text, email or video call you unexpectedly asking for your bank details.RTE reports that officials are concerned that members of the public may confuse the scam attempts with legitimate financial assistance schemes that have become available to those affected by Storm Chandra. Posting to Instagram, they said: "Scam texts and emails are on the rise.""Be wary of unexpected messages about energy grants or upgrades. Always check gov.ie for trusted information. If in doubt, don’t click."Issuing some advice, they said that anyone who believes they have been a victim of a scam should report it to their local Garda station.
