The dispute follows U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s allegations that Confucius Institutes were operating under different names across American university campuses. Hegseth claimed that 80 “propaganda cells” had appeared at 30 universities, accusing them of seeking to steal intellectual property and influence American students. Those accusations reflect Washington’s security concerns, while Beijing rejects the characterization. The controversy adds another flashpoint to U.S.-China tensions.
