With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, Michigan's Senate race is drawing national attention as Democrats and Republicans battle for control of the U.S. Senate.

In Grand Rapids, Sanders criticised the Republican campaign's rhetoric and highlighted healthcare, housing and economic inequality. El-Sayed responded defiantly, telling supporters that Trump could be calling him “Senator” after the election.

The confrontation follows Barack Obama's campaign appearance in Detroit and Trump's rally in Port Huron, where the president repeated his attacks on the Democratic nominee.
