'China Poisoning Americans': Hegseth Flags '80 Beijing-Backed Cells' In US; 'Nat'l Security At Risk'

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has accused China-backed Confucius Institutes of operating as secret propaganda cells inside American universities. In a video address from Washington, Hegseth claimed that 80 organisations had resurfaced under new names across 30 universities, allegedly continuing efforts to steal intellectual property and influence American students.

Hegseth said the Pentagon had identified these organisations as national security threats and used its influence to dismantle them over the past two months. He described the groups as sleeper organisations allegedly operating under different identities and charters while pursuing the same objectives.
