'Canada Is One': Trump's '51st State' Dream Crushed As Carney Wins Big In Alberta Amid U.S. Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has scored a major political victory after Alberta voted to remain part of Canada in the province’s first-ever referendum on separation. With 76.5% of ballots reportedly backing the province’s continued place in Canada, the result deals a blow to separatist campaigners and strengthens Carney’s push for national unity. The vote comes amid long-running tensions between oil-rich Alberta and the federal government over energy policies, resource revenues and the province’s economic future. Carney had also warned that US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and pressure could deepen divisions within Canada, accusing outside forces of seeking to weaken the country to gain control of its resources. With Alberta producing the bulk of Canada’s oil and the US serving as its main export market, the referendum carries major political and economic implications as Ottawa faces growing trade tensions with Washington.
