'America First': Big Win For Putin As Trump Rolls Back Russia Sanctions In Blow To Zelensky & Europe

US President Donald Trump has blocked new sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia just two days before they were due to take effect, citing the national interest of the United States. In an executive order signed on October 16, Trump waived several sanctions, restrictions and duties under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The legislation would have allowed Washington to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from major importers of Russian crude oil and gas, while also targeting Russian officials, financial institutions and Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet. Russia has welcomed the decision, with sovereign wealth fund chief Kirill Dmitriev calling it an important and historic moment for economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington. The move comes days after Trump announced a diesel deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin and amid growing tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently spoke of being among “real leaders” at an EU summit.
