Iran Rubs Salt Into Zelensky's Wounds After Trump-Putin Deal; 'Cost Of American Friendship...'
Iran has invoked a famous line attributed to former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger while responding to Donald Trump’s remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei was asked about Trump saying it was time for Ukraine to have a new president. Baghaei responded by citing Kissinger, saying: “Being an enemy of America can be dangerous, but being a friend of America is fatal.” The remark amounted to a pointed Iranian response amid tensions between Washington and Kyiv and growing pressure on Zelensky from the Trump administration. Baghaei presented the quotation as a warning about relying on the United States as an ally. The line has long circulated as being attributed to Kissinger, although its exact origin has been disputed. Tehran’s use of it was unmistakably aimed at the current US-Ukraine relationship, turning Trump’s comments about Zelensky into an opportunity to question the reliability of American partnerships.
