France’s only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, caught fire at the Toulon naval base while undergoing scheduled maintenance. The French Navy said the fire was extinguished several hours after breaking out, with no injuries reported and no impact on the carrier’s nuclear facilities.
Initial findings suggest the blaze may have been caused by cutting work involving a blowtorch. The incident is now under investigation.
The Charles de Gaulle has been undergoing a “technical stop” at Toulon since late August and is expected to remain there until early December. The carrier is one of France’s most important military assets and a key part of its ability to project air power overseas.
