Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has defended Moscow’s use of military force in Ukraine, arguing that Russian strikes are aimed at what he described as infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s war effort against Russia. During an exchange with journalists in Moscow, Lavrov was challenged over whether Russia is using “brute force” in Ukraine on a daily basis. Lavrov responded that Russia is indeed using force, but described it as a response to what he called a “direct threat” to the Russian Federation. He also challenged Western references to the use of force by pointing to the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines and the killing of Iranian leaders and their families during the conflict in Iran. The remarks come as Russia continues its military campaign in Ukraine, while diplomatic efforts to end the war remain unresolved.
