ON CAM: Iran's 'New Defense System' In Action, America's Historic Aircraft Comes Under Fire

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has released footage it claims shows the interception and destruction of another American MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz. The video shows an Iranian surveillance system tracking an airborne object before the target disappears from the display, although it does not independently establish the aircraft’s identity or show wreckage. Tehran described the drone as the platform once nicknamed the “Butcher of Kandahar,” referring to the MQ-1 Predator used extensively during the American war in Afghanistan. The U.S. Air Force retired the Predator in 2018, but the MQ-1 designation also includes the operational MQ-1C Gray Eagle. Iran says newly deployed air-defence systems are increasingly detecting and targeting American surveillance aircraft around the Persian Gulf. Tehran’s wider message is that Washington’s eyes over Hormuz are no longer operating beyond Iranian reach.
