I Drove VRC's 2026 F1 Car — Here's What I Learned
What is a 2026 F1 car actually like to drive?
The new 2026 regulations have completely changed the balance between the internal combustion engine, battery and aerodynamics. With the MGU-K now producing up to 350kW and the electrical side of the power unit playing a much larger role, drivers have more energy management and decision-making to deal with than ever before.
In this video, I drive VRC's 2026 F1 car in the simulator to explore what these cars are actually like from a driver's perspective — beyond simply looking at the regulations on paper.
I look at several of the biggest challenges created by the new cars:
WORKLOAD & DRIVER CAPACITY
Drivers now have to manage significantly more electrical energy, including Boost, SLM/energy deployment, Recharge and other steering-wheel inputs, while still driving the car at the limit.
The interesting question isn't simply whether there are more buttons — it's whether the driver has enough capacity to manage all of these systems while maintaining maximum performance.
LESS GRIP & LESS DOWNFORCE
The 2026 cars are lighter and significantly reduced in downforce compared with the previous generation. The result is a car that feels more agile, but also gives the driver less aerodynamic grip to work with.
That changes how aggressively you can attack corners, how much confidence you have in the car and how much precision is required to extract the last few tenths.
BRAKING PRECISION
With the new cars and increased energy recovery through the MGU-K, the braking phase becomes an even more important part of managing both the car and the battery.
I'll also look at why braking performance and consistency can be particularly difficult to optimise — and how this relates to some of the challenges we've seen drivers such as George Russell and Oscar Piastri experience with the new generation of cars.
TRACTION
With less rear downforce and a much greater proportion of electrical power being delivered through the rear wheels, traction becomes another major challenge.
The driver has to be incredibly precise with throttle application and understand exactly how much grip is available when accelerating out of slow corners.
CONSISTENCY
A fast lap is one thing. Producing the same braking points, minimum speeds, throttle application, energy deployment and traction lap after lap is another.
The 2026 regulations have created a car that demands a different combination of technical precision, physical execution and mental capacity from the driver.
