Russia appears to be reinforcing its military presence in Syria, with satellite images showing Russian naval and cargo vessels docked at Tartous port. The Russian cargo ship Sparta and naval replenishment vessel Akademik Pashin are part of a reported four-vessel convoy delivering supplies to facilities used by Moscow’s forces.
The shipment comes after Russia and Syria reached a new agreement on the future of Moscow’s military bases at Tartous and Hmeimim. The deal could transform the facilities into joint training and capacity-building centres while allowing Russia to maintain a presence.
With Bashar al-Assad now in Moscow and Damascus seeking to reshape its relationship with Russia, the latest activity at Tartous could reveal how Moscow is trying to preserve its strategic foothold in the Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa.
