On a busy first day back after parliament's summer break:
- Prime Minister Andy Burnham told MPs he would "bring back hope" in a speech discussing the prison early release scheme, Ukraine and growth.
- Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch challenged the prime minister on defence spending and immigration.
- Sir Keir Starmer announced he'd stand down as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras, triggering a by-election that Green leader Zack Polanski could contest. Starmer's biographer Tom Baldwin says the ex-PM 'doesn't like being a politician'.
- Nigel Farage was sworn in as an MP again after winning the Clacton by-election that was triggered when he resigned.
- Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds admits "there aren't many easy wins" for the government - but dismisses those proposing "easy answers".
