A rare dragonfly species, the Spoon-Tailed Dusk Hawker, has been photographically documented for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting the extraordinary and largely unexplored biodiversity of India’s northeastern forests.
The remarkable discovery was made within the Namdapha landscape. The species belongs to the Aeshnidae family, commonly known as hawkers, a group of large and powerful-flying dragonflies.
The Spoon-Tailed Dusk Hawker is known for its distinctive appearance, including a black T-shaped pattern on its frons and an unstriped olive-green thorax. Unlike many dragonflies, the species is particularly active around dawn and dusk.
During daylight hours, males can remain motionless while hanging vertically from twigs, roots or tree trunks. The species is also a carnivorous aerial hunter, feeding on flying insects such as mosquitoes and small flies and potentially helping provide natural pest control.
The discovery has been welcomed as an important addition to Arunachal Pradesh’s biodiversity record and highlights the ecological importance of the state’s forests, including the Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve.
