Our First Impressions of SOUTH CAROLINA, USA 🇺🇸

Our first taste of South Carolina began deep in a cypress swamp, rowing through almost complete silence with an alligator slipping through the water beside us. From there we headed into Charleston for barbecue at Lewis Barbecue. Texas style perhaps, but judging by the queues, this is clearly where Charleston comes to eat.

We spent the afternoon wandering downtown, buying hot sauce from a local vendor at the farmers market and getting lost among some of the most beautiful streets we've seen in America. Eventually we followed the story of the city's beginnings out towards the marshes and the site of the first English settlement. Standing there, looking across that landscape and imagining the people who sailed into an unknown world almost 350 years ago, it was difficult not to feel the weight of it.

Charleston gave us a fascinating first taste of South Carolina, but now we're leaving the city behind. We're heading into the tiny towns, back roads and rural communities of the state, and something tells us South Carolina is only just getting started.
