Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rejected U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's characterization of the Anchorage talks, arguing that it was necessary to determine "who failed" before declaring the diplomatic effort unsuccessful. Speaking in Kyrgyzstan, Lavrov said Russia had accepted what he described as a U.S.-proposed compromise to halt hostilities and begin negotiations, but claimed Ukraine rejected the proposal with support from its European allies. Lavrov added that Moscow remains open to diplomacy while insisting Russia will pursue the objectives set by President Vladimir Putin if a negotiated settlement cannot be reached.
