Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video on the Troubles period in Britain and Ireland. For more than 30 years, Northern Ireland was consumed by one of Europe’s deadliest modern conflicts: The Troubles. This video explains how centuries of British rule, Protestant settlement in Ulster, Irish partition, discrimination, nationalism, unionism, and sectarian tension created the conditions for violence. Beginning with the civil rights marches of the late 1960s, we follow the escalation from police brutality and the Battle of the Bogside to the deployment of British troops, internment, Bloody Sunday, and the rapid growth of the Provisional IRA. The video traces the bloodiest years of the conflict, including IRA bombings, loyalist attacks, the collapse of the Sunningdale Agreement, the Long War strategy, Warrenpoint, the death of Lord Mountbatten, the Maze Prison hunger strikes, Bobby Sands, and the bombing campaigns in Britain. It also covers the Anglo-Irish Agreement, foreign support from Libya and South Africa, the violence of the 1980s and 1990s, and the road to peace. Finally, we examine the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, how it reshaped Northern Ireland, and why the legacy of The Troubles still matters today.
