Frozen 3 Finally Makes Huge Progress, 3 Years After Disney Sequel Was Officially Announced
Frozen III is thawing the long wait with an exciting update. In the seven years since Frozen II was released, anticipation has been building for the third installment in the hit animated film series. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in 2023 that a third movie was officially happening, and it is now scheduled to be released in theaters on November 24, 2027. Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the two previous films, is helming Frozen III, this time alongside Trent Correy. Now, on Instagram, the voice of Olaf, Josh Gad, is seen holding a plush toy of his beloved character and putting up the number three with his fingers. He is joined by Lee, Correy, and producer Christina Chen as they stand in front of Olaf drawings on a whiteboard. Gad's caption reads: "3rd time is always the charm," followed by a snowman emoji and "Time to build another snowman. #frozen3." Check out the post below:
While Disney has not officially announced that Frozen III production is underway, Gad's picture with the directors and producer is a promising sign of significant progress. Recording starting or being about to start bodes well for the long-awaited sequel being able to meet its late 2027 release date. This is especially important after the Disney theatrical sequel was delayed from its original date of November 25, 2026. The update comes a few months after reports of Josh Gad, Kristen Bell, and Idina Menzel's record-breaking deals for Frozen III and Frozen IV. They are each set to make $60 million between the two movies, which is the highest amount that any voice actors have received in the history of animation. Bell and Menzel will reprise their respective roles as sisters Elsa and Anna, while Jonathan Groff returns to voice Kristoff. All details about Frozen III's story remain under wraps, but there is a chance of this changing later on in 2026, especially around Thanksgiving when the sequel is a year away from releasing. Fan theories about the plot include the return of Hans (Santino Fontana), Anna developing powers, Anna and Kristoff having children, and Elsa getting a romantic interest, all of which could carry over into the fourth film as well.
Regardless of Frozen III's story, box office expectations are already high, especially with its predecessors being Disney movies that made more than $1 billion worldwide. After Frozen II's dominance during Thanksgiving 2019, Disney had several financial disappointments during this time of year, but that has changed thanks to the lucrative performances from Moana 2 and Zootopia 2.
