ON CAM: Macron's Palace Under Fire; Rioters Attempt To Storm Élysée Palace Amid Escalation In Paris
Protesters in Paris attempted to move towards President Emmanuel Macron’s Élysée Palace as nationwide demonstrations over living costs, inequality and public services erupted into fresh clashes with police. French authorities had already prohibited demonstrations around the presidential palace, the prime minister’s office and the Champs-Élysées. As authorised marches moved through Paris, other groups broke away, with one attempting to approach the Élysée before police stopped the advance. Protesters did not breach the presidential palace. Elsewhere in the capital, cars and barricades were set ablaze, shops were looted and riot police deployed tear gas and water cannon. More than 300 protesters also attempted to move onto the Champs-Élysées before being blocked by police. The demonstrations have grown from weeks of student-led protests into a broader anti-government mobilisation. With calls for Macron to resign heard in Paris, the unrest has now reached the heavily protected area surrounding the seat of the French presidency.
