German Chancellor Friedrich Merz faced a heated showdown in parliament as he defended billions of euros in military aid for Ukraine and Germany’s rising defence spending. Merz insisted that not a single euro spent on Ukraine is being taken away from Germany’s social welfare or education budgets, pushing back against growing criticism of his government’s spending priorities.
Merz also defended increased investment in Germany’s security, arguing that defence spending is essential to protecting the country’s economy, society and democratic institutions. Germany has provided or earmarked around €57.6 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since February 2022, according to government figures published in 2026. Berlin also recently announced a support package worth more than €1.3 billion, including interceptor drones and energy assistance.
