Japan’s AI Adoption Lags Behind Global Rivals, Reuters Survey Finds

Japan’s companies are struggling to keep pace in the global AI race, with a new Reuters survey showing that more than 80% of Japanese firms either use AI only in limited areas or have not adopted it at all.

Only 16% of surveyed companies said AI has been deployed companywide as an integral business tool, while around 60% reported limited use. Another 18% have not yet decided whether to introduce AI, and 6% are not considering adoption.

Japan also trails other major economies in generative AI adoption, with government data showing lower usage than China, Germany and the United States. However, Japanese companies are planning to increase AI spending, suggesting that investment could accelerate even as businesses work out how best to use the technology.

The Reuters survey was conducted by Nikkei Research between July 29 and August 6, covering 510 companies, with 219 responding anonymously.
