DPP gives green light for murder charge in schoolgirl's killing— suspect to face court
• A murder charge is expected to be laid against the man accused of killing 12-year-old schoolgirl Mercedez Layne after police received legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
• Investigators were advised to charge 27-year-old Richard Renales of Dickie Trace, Palo Seco Beach Road with the murder of the St. Francis Erin R.C. School student, whose death shocked communities across south Trinidad and sparked a massive police search.
• Renales is expected to appear before a High Court Master on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The charge is expected to be formally laid by Woman Corporal Dyer-Baptiste of the Region Three Homicide Bureau of Investigations.
• Mercedez was reported missing on Saturday, June 6th, before a large-scale search operation was launched by police. Hours later on Sunday, June 7th, the young girl's body was discovered off Carapal Road, Erin.
• An autopsy subsequently determined that she died as a result of severe beatings.
• Investigations led officers to a vehicle believed to have been used in the incident. Police said the PH taxi that the child had entered was located by officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit parked beneath a tree at the suspect's Palo Seco home before the child's body was found.

• Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has reaffirmed her government's commitment to protecting the nation's children, describing their safety and well-being as a top priority.
• The Prime Minister made the statement in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, while responding to questions regarding recent incidents involving violence against children.
• Her comments came in response to a question posed by Lopinot/Bon Air West MP Marvin Gonzales, who sought clarification on the Government's plans to strengthen child protection measures following several recent tragedies.
• Among the incidents raised during the parliamentary exchange was the murder of 12-year-old Mercedez Layne, whose death has sparked widespread grief and outrage across Trinidad and Tobago.
• Addressing the issue, Persad-Bissessar stated that her administration remains fully committed to ensuring the protection of children and implementing measures aimed at safeguarding young people from harm.
• She acknowledged the deep concern being felt by citizens over recent acts of violence involving minors and emphasized that the Government recognizes its responsibility to provide a safe environment for children throughout the country.
• The Prime Minister's remarks come amid growing national calls for stronger child protection systems, increased community vigilance and enhanced support services for vulnerable children.
• The issue continues to generate widespread public discussion as citizens seek answers and assurances following a series of incidents that have shaken communities across the nation.
• Within the last two months, five children were murdered in separate incidents across T&T.
