FRIDAY 5TH JUNE 2026 - CRIME WATCH LIVE
Today's Highlights:
Beckles finally swings the axe: Janelle John-Bates fired from Senate after witness statement scandal
• Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has finally removed Janelle John-Bates from the Senate, ending weeks of controversy and mounting pressure over the senator's involvement in a parliamentary witness statement scandal.
• The announcement was made during Friday's sitting of the Senate when Senate President Wade Mark informed members that President Christine Kangaloo had revoked John-Bates' appointment on the advice of Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles, in accordance with the Constitution.
• Mark also announced that Dr. Margaret Satya Rose had been appointed to replace her on the Opposition bench.
• The move comes just two days after Beckles revealed during a June 3 media briefing that changes had been made to the Opposition's Senate team and would be announced on Friday.
• John-Bates' removal follows a controversy stemming from a Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) inquiry into the State's acquisition of pharmaceuticals.
• The senator came under intense scrutiny after it emerged that she had assisted former Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh in preparing and editing a memorandum of evidence intended for submission to the PAAC, a committee on which she was serving as a member at the time. Metadata and tracked changes within the document reportedly revealed edits made by both John-Bates and fellow Opposition Senator Faris Al-Rawi.
• The matter sparked allegations of conflict of interest and raised concerns about the integrity of the committee's proceedings. A special parliamentary report stated that John-Bates admitted to making material changes and assisting in the preparation of Deyalsingh's evidence while remaining a member of the committee that was expected to examine the witness.
The fallout was swift.
• John-Bates was removed from the PAAC in April and later faced additional scrutiny in Parliament. Both she and Al-Rawi were referred to Parliament's Privileges Committee over their involvement in the matter, while she was subsequently removed from the Joint Select Committee on National Security.
• The controversy also generated repeated calls for Beckles to remove both senators from the Opposition's parliamentary team. However, Beckles consistently resisted public pressure, maintaining that she would review reports from those involved and make a determination when she considered it appropriate.
• For weeks, the Opposition Leader dismissed demands for immediate action, insisting that decisions concerning her parliamentary team would be made on her timetable and after a full assessment of the facts.
• Friday's announcement finally brings the matter to an end.
• The appointment of Dr. Margaret Satya Rose forms part of a broader reshaping of the Opposition's parliamentary lineup as Parliament prepares for the Second Session of the 13th Republican Parliament.
