FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 Firmware 1.10 Released – Roadmap Promises Automatic ND Control, LANC Support, and MXF Playback

FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 Firmware 1.10 Released – Roadmap Promises Automatic ND Control, LANC Support, and MXF Playbackby Nino LeitnerToday

FUJIFILM has released firmware version 1.10 for the GFX ETERNA 55, stabilizing white balance with PL lenses and refining overall operation of the company’s first dedicated filmmaking camera. Alongside the update, FUJIFILM has published a firmware roadmap stretching into 2027 that promises in-camera MXF playback, settings backup via a dedicated app, additional anamorphic desqueeze options, automatic electronic ND adjustment, LANC support, and remote control of FUJINON Duvo lenses.

The GFX ETERNA 55 has been on a steady firmware cadence since shipping began in late 2025. Version 1.02 introduced external RAW recording to Atomos devices via HDMI and SDI, while version 1.04 brought reduced display delay for external monitors in selected formats. If you are new to the camera itself, our full specs overview and Johnnie’s first-look review and mini-documentary cover the 102MP large format cinema camera in depth. With version 1.10, FUJIFILM is not only polishing the current feature set but also, for the first time, laying out a public roadmap of what owners can expect over the next 18 months.

The headline fix in version 1.10 addresses white balance behavior when shooting through the included genuine PL mount adapter. According to FUJIFILM, white balance is now maintained and no longer shifts when using FUJIFILM PL lenses that have not yet been updated to GFX ETERNA 55-compatible firmware, as well as when using third-party PL glass. Given how many owners pair the camera’s large 4:3 sensor with PL-mount cinema and anamorphic lenses, this is a meaningful reliability improvement for real-world production.

There is an important caveat, though. FUJIFILM explicitly warns users to finish any project shot on previous firmware before updating, as the color tone may change after installing version 1.10. If you are mid-production, matching footage across firmware versions could become a headache, so plan the update between jobs.

Beyond the white balance fix, the release notes mention enhanced stability and operability during menu operations and recording under certain conditions, along with improved display accuracy, timecode behavior, and monitor performance in specific shooting and playback situations. FUJIFILM also asks users to connect an external monitor during the update process, as the firmware update status is displayed there.

Version 1.20: MXF playback, app backup, and more desqueeze options

The more interesting part of this announcement is arguably the roadmap. FUJIFILM says version 1.20 or later, expected later in 2026, will add support for in-camera playback of MXF (Material eXchange Format) files, a feature the company first teased at Inter BEE 2025. The update will also introduce backup and restore of camera settings via a dedicated app, which should be welcome news for rental houses and multi-camera productions that need to replicate configurations quickly.

FUJIFILM additionally plans further improvements to the SDI and HDMI video latency reductions introduced in firmware 1.04, plus additional anamorphic desqueeze options, including Open Gate 4K 4:3. Considering the camera’s native 4:3 sensor is one of its strongest arguments for anamorphic work (a point that came through clearly in our first-look review), expanded desqueeze flexibility directly serves the audience this camera was built for.

Looking further ahead, version 1.30 or later, scheduled for January 2027 or later, focuses on operability. FUJIFILM plans additional preset options for coarse adjustments of the electronic variable ND filter, and, more notably, automatic in-camera adjustment of ND filter density while maintaining constant values for iris, shutter angle, and ISO sensitivity. In practice, this amounts to an auto ND mode, a feature documentary and run-and-gun shooters will appreciate when moving between changing light conditions without touching exposure parameters.

The same update is slated to bring LANC (Local Application Control Bus System) support for wired remote operation, along with remote control of FUJINON Duvo series lenses through the multi-function dial located on both the camera body and the handle. The Duvo integration makes sense given the camera’s growing presence in documentary and broadcast-style setups, and it builds on earlier firmware work that resolved a freeze issue when operating the Duvo expander while recording.

Updated media compatibility chart

Alongside the firmware release, FUJIFILM has refreshed the GFX ETERNA 55 recording media compatibility chart, listing approved media for reliable performance with this and future updates. Since the camera has already earned an official “Filmed for IMAX” certification and is increasingly showing up on demanding productions, checking your cards against the current chart before the next shoot is a sensible habit.

The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is available for $16,499.95 / €13,285.30. Firmware version 1.10 is a free download from the FUJIFILM support page, and FUJIFILM recommends a fully charged battery or external power during installation.
