miniature OLED display loops the matrix’s cascading green code inside a signet ring

Daniel Idle translates one of the most recognizable digital interfaces in the history of cinema into a piece of jewelry with the Digital Rain Ring, a sterling silver-plated signet ring fitted with a miniature OLED display that loops The Matrix‘s cascading green code. The ring focuses on a single visual gesture, transforming a familiar screen-based graphic into an object worn on the hand. Alongside the code, the display occasionally flashes ‘Wake up, Neo,’ another direct reference to The Matrix.

When inactive, the OLED display blends into the black face of the ring, reading almost like an onyx or obsidian stone set within a clean bezel. Only when the animation starts does it become clear that the ring houses a tiny display.

engineering a wearable matrix interface

The ring’s proportions reflect the challenge of integrating electronics into a wearable object. Measuring roughly 21 × 18 millimeters across the face, its broad, signet-like silhouette provides enough surface area for the tiny display while tapering toward an open C-shaped band that accommodates the internal hardware. Early prototypes, visible in resin prints and CAD models, document the iterative process behind balancing ergonomics, electronics, and visual weight.

Inside, UK-based designer Daniel Idle developed a custom miniature PCB connected to the OLED through a flexible ribbon cable, allowing the display to sit flush within the ring’s bezel. A USB-C charging port is integrated into the electronics, while the compact circuit board is concealed once assembled, leaving the finished object visually closer to jewelry than electronics.

Beyond its engineering, the Digital Rain Ring taps into the enduring cultural legacy of The Matrix. The franchise’s falling green code has become shorthand for virtual worlds, hacking culture, and early internet aesthetics, making it immediately recognizable even at the scale of a fingertip. Idle revisits an existing interface, relocating a cinematic visual language from the screen to the body.
