Race against time as community unites to save pony sinking into bog
A desperate five-hour rescue operation involving the NSPCA, local emergency services, veterinary professionals and members of the community saved the life of a pony that became trapped in a bog hole in County Offaly this week.
The NSPCA was alerted by the Offaly Dog Warden after reports that a pony had become stuck in a bog and was sinking. NSPCA Inspector McCormack responded immediately, locating the exhausted animal struggling to stay above the surface.

Recognising the seriousness of the situation, he called on local people for assistance. Together with members of An Garda Síochána, rescuers worked tirelessly to free the pony. However, the challenging terrain and lack of access for machinery made the operation exceptionally difficult.
Although the pony was in good health, she had already sunk deep into the bog by the time help arrived, and it was clear that exhaustion had set in.
As the rescue continued, more help arrived and the team finally managed to pull the pony free from the bog hole. However, the danger was far from over.
The unstable ground meant she continued to sink, forcing rescuers to drag her a considerable distance across the bog before reaching firm ground.
A local vet administered fluids and emergency treatment to support the exhausted animal throughout the ordeal.
After five gruelling hours, the pony finally found the strength to stand.
On Saturday, the NSPCA received the welcome news that the pony is safely back in her stable and recovering well.
It is believed the pony may have gained access to the bog after a gate was accidentally opened.
The NSPCA has praised the remarkable teamwork that made the rescue possible.
