Trump says Iran will 'pay the price' following further US strikes

US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran will ‘pay the price’ following strikes on American assets in the Middle East. The Iranian strikes came in retaliation to strikes from America on Tuesday, and put a serious question over the already shaky ceasefire deal between the two. On Wednesday, the 79-year-old seemed to threaten further military action as he condemned the time it is taking for deal negotiations. They said the strikes were ‘in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression.’ Iran has since launched strikes on Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. Airspace in Kuwait was closed temporarily while its air defences fought off the attack. The statement said that Iran would ‘not hesitate to exercise its inherent right to defend itself.’ Earlier in the week, 21 sites at US bases were targeted by Iran across the region, according to local publication Tasnim. Five missiles from Iran were intercepted by armed forces from Jordan, while Bahrain’s military also confirmed they had intercepted some missiles and drones from Iran. US Central Command confirmed the strikes, detailing that they had been ‘self-defence strikes’ as ordered by Trump. The order came after a US Army Apache helicopter was shot down on Monday. The helicopter had been patrolling the Strait of Hormuz during the incident. The retaliatory strikes on Tuesday were a ‘proportional response to recent attacks on US forces and international commercial ships,’ Centcom said. It comes as the American president faces backlash for his threats to attack major infrastructure in Iran. Elsewhere, Trump confirmed he had ordered the US military to carry out a secret operation to support oil tankers and other commercial ships through the strait. He told reporters: ‘I’m just announcing today for the first time, but we’ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil, millions of barrels every night. ‘Millions of barrels of oil has come out, and that’s why it’s at $85-$90 a barrel, instead of $250.’
