‘I’ll forgive you’ - Chelsea fans react to Katie McCabe signing after Champions League controversy

Chelsea fans were quick to react on social media to the signing of Katie McCabe from Arsenal. The Ireland captain completed the cross-city move on Monday and across 10 different posts there were hundreds of replies, with one subject coming up time and again.McCabe grabbed Chelsea forward Alyssa Thompson by the hair during the Champions League quarter-final between the two London clubs. The Dubliner said afterwards that she was reaching for Thompson’s jersey and that she accidentally got a handful of hair. She spoke about the incident when she was in Dublin for the World Cup qualifier against Poland and said: “You could see from my reaction straight afterwards how apologetic that I was. I’ve reached out to Thompson as well to reiterate those apologies.“I’ve massive respect for her. She’s a phenomenal player and that’s all I’ll say about that.”Immediately after the game, McCabe’s new boss Sonia Bompastor slammed the decision not to show the Ireland star a red card.“I just think it’s not good enough,” said the Chelsea boss. “At the end I’m the one who gets a red card where I think the Arsenal player should be the one who gets a red card.“What is the VAR doing in these games? If we have the VAR, why are we not checking these situations? I don’t understand, and it’s not good enough.”Chelsea fans were also outraged - but upon the news of McCabe’s signing things seemed to cool off considerably. One Blues fan posted: “Welcome to the biggest club in London, Katie. I'll forgive you for what you did to Thompson because you are now a blue!”Another wrote: Sonia, please teach her to keep her hands to herself.”Referring to McCabe stating that she grew up supporting Chelsea, a fan posted: “Welcome Blues, you’re forgiven cos you’re one of us from childhood.”And another supporter joked: “Now next time we play Arsenal, Thompson's hair will be safe. Welcome to the Blue family Katie.”Click here to sign up to our sport newsletter, bringing you the top stories and biggest headlines from Ireland and beyond.
