Netflix's new thriller that you "won't forget" confirms release date with first-look images

Netflix is dialling the tension up to 11 with upcoming sci-fi thriller The Last House, hinging on one disturbing premise — what if your house turns into a prison you can't escape? Stuck inside their own home are couple Ann and Jason, played by Past Lives' Greta Lee and The Secret Agent star Wagner Moura, and their two children, with the quartet desperately trying to figure out who, or what, is keeping them inside. As modern comforts and everyday essentials start to run out, a lovely home turns into "this ordinary family's worst nightmare", as director Louis Leterrier told Tudum.Rounding out the cast of The Last House are The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Riley Chung, as well as Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Barbosa.NetflixNetflixComing to the streamer on 7 August, the film is penned by Matthew Robinson, who also wrote Love and Monsters, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and The Invention of Lying. "Growing up my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist," Lee said, adding she was "immediately drawn" to The Last House. "I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way," she continued.“The storyline will evolve in ways that the audience certainly will not expect, but that is what makes this film so interesting," Moura said, teasing "layers and twists" in store for the audience."All I can say is - you are definitely in for a surprise," Lee agreed.NetflixNetflixRelated: Best streaming services UK 2026 – including Disney Plus, Netflix, iPlayer and Apple TVFirst announced in 2024, the film was originally titled 11817, with Leterrier assuring his film would be "an experience that movie audiences won't forget" (via Deadline).Consider us hyped and ready to stay in for movie night when the film releases this summer — provided we can leave afterwards. The Last House is released on Netflix on 7 August. The new edition of Living Legends, a 100-page all-colour celebration of Sir David Attenborough, is here!
